The town was for many years famous for hat-making and was also home to a large Vauxhall Motors factory; the head office of Vauxhall Motors is still situated in the town. Car production at the plant began in 1905 and continued until 2002, but commercial vehicle production remains.

The M1 connects with Luton at Junctions 10 and 11, to the south and west providing access to London and the north.
Luton Airport is 2 miles (3.2 km) from Junction 10a of the M1 motorway and is the fourth largest airport serving London after Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. It is one of London's five international airports along with London City Airport. Serving the airport are EasyJet, Monarch Airlines, Thomson Airways and Ryanair. Most routes served are within Europe, although there are some charter airline routes to intercontinental destinations.
Luton is served by three railway stations, Luton, Luton Airport Parkway and Leagrave, all on the same line. First Capital Connect's high frequency Thameslink route services run north to Bedford and south to Brighton via several central London stations. An alternative, provided by East Midlands Trains regional and intercity services, runs north to Leicester, Nottingham, Lincoln, Sheffield, Leeds and other cities, and south to London St Pancras International on the Midland Main Line.
