County Durham is a ceremonial county in North East England; its county town is Durham. The ceremonial county borders Tyne and Wear, Cumbria, Northumberland and North Yorkshire, forming part of the North East England region. It is an area of regeneration and promoted as a tourist destination. Durham railway station lies on the East Coast Main Line between Edinburgh and London; from the south, travellers by rail enter Durham over a spectacular Victorian viaduct above the city. To access serviced offices in County Durham by road, the A1 (M) passes east of the city. Newcastle Airport lies to the north and Durham Tees Valley Airport to the south, both about 25 miles away. The County Council operate a bus-based park and ride service to the city centre and Durham City bus station has links to Newcastle and Sunderland.
