Dumbarton is less than an hour from Glasgow and sits at the mouth of the River Clyde.
The key to the town’s original success was the outcrop of volcanic rock, now home to Dumbarton Castle. To the west of Dunbarton lies the popular Overtoun Estate, a stunning mansion dating back to 1859. Boasting a variety of landscapes, from wooded glens to rolling parkland and exotic gardens, it offers superb views of the surrounding Kilpatrick Hills.
A great many ships were built in the town, the most famous being the Cutty Sark, built by Scott & Linton, she can be seen today at dry dock in Greenwich, London.
Dumbarton is becoming a commuter town for those working in nearby Glasgow and other locations. The Faslane naval base is a major employer for the area and the Strathleven Industrial Estate near Dumbarton is home to Polaroid UK. The generator supplier Aggreko Plc has had a facility in the town since the 1970’s, moving to a new, larger facility in 2012.
The main A82 road links serviced offices in Dunbartonshire to Glasgow and the western Scottish Highlands. Railway services link Helensburgh in the west, through Glasgow Queen Street, to Edinburgh Waverley in the east.
