St Albans is located in southern Hertfordshire, England, around 22 miles (35 km) north of central London, which forms the main urban area of the City and District of St Albans. It became the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street for travellers heading north and became the Roman city of Verulamium.

It is a historic market town, and is now a sought-after dormitory town within the London commuter belt. Property prices are notoriously high within the district, which is one of the most expensive in the UK.

The City of St Albans is served by two railway stations. St Albans City Station is situated in Victoria Street and services are run by First Capital Connect. From December 2008, major engineering works will affect some services. St Albans Abbey Station is situated at the bottom of Holywell Hill and services are provided by London Midland. The station provides a local service into Watford Junction, from where you can connect to the Euston Mainline services.
