St Albans is located in southern Hertfordshire, England, around 22 miles (35 km) north of central London, which forms the main urban area of the City and District of St Albans. It became the first major town on the old Roman road of Watling Street for travellers heading north and became the Roman city of Verulamium.

The City of St Albans is served by two railway stations. St Albans City Station is situated in Victoria Street and services are run by First Capital Connect. The service connects Bedford in the north, directly through London, to Brighton in the south. Gatwick Airport and Luton Airport are also served on the same line.
