Midlothian borders the City of Edinburgh, East Lothian and the Scottish Borders council areas. Dalkeith is the main administrative centre for Midlothian.
Midlothian, predominantly a rural area, is also one of the hilliest parts of the Central Lowlands, its boundaries marked out by the Pentland chain to the west, and the Moorfoots to the south. For open spaces, there is Dalkeith Country Park. This unique, semi-natural woodland is home to deer, foxes and a vast number of smaller birds, animals and insects.
Midlothian's main attraction can be found in the village of Roslin, 7 miles south of Edinburgh. The decorated late-Gothic Rosslyn Chapel, featured in the blockbuster film and book, 'The Da Vinci Code' is located in the village.
Main roads linking serviced offices in Midlothian to the rest of Scotland include the A6094, towards Bonnyrigg and Peebles, the A768, west from Eskbank to Lasswade and Loanhead, the B6414 to Tranent and the B6392 from Edinburgh to Galashiels and Hawick.
The northern section of the Waverley Railway Line will soon re-connect Dalkeith to the national rail network after more than 40 years.
