Wolverhampton is one of the country’s ancient cities with its history stretching back to 985 when it was founded by Wulfrun, an Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who was granted the lands by King Ethelred the Unready. At one point, there were 200 bicycle manufacturers in Wolverhampton. Nowadays Wolverhampton is a thriving hub at the heart of England, particularly with regards to the service sector, which makes up 74.9% of the employment of the area.

Wolverhampton Transport

With its central location on the west side of England, Wolverhampton has a wealth of transport links to support the industry based there. Airports, train lines and motorways connect Wolverhampton with its neighbours including Birmingham, Leicester, Stoke-on-Trent and Coventry, as well as further afield destinations.

Wolverhampton has its own airport called the Halfpenny Green Airport, but it only serves light aircraft and no commercial flights. The nearest major airports are Birmingham Airport and the East Midlands Airport. Birmingham is the closer of the two at 28 miles, and trains depart regularly between the airport and Wolverhampton’s central railway station.

Wolverhampton’s main railway station is located at the centre of the city, found on Railway Drive. Wolverhampton as a city is on the Birmingham Loop on the West Coast Main Line, while neighbouring Birmingham is the main destination on the proposed HS2 service from London to Birmingham.

A bus network criss-crosses the entire city of Wolverhampton, and regular services depart daily from the Wolverhampton bus station, found on Piper’s Row in Horseley Fields.

Driving into Wolverhampton is simple and uncomplicated, thanks to the A4150 ring road which regulates access to the city centre. The nearest motorway which opens up smaller roads to Wolverhampton is the M6.
